The study of wood as a renewable material and organic material is what is known as wood science. The processes and the tools used to utilize the material is what is known as wood technology. Other products are put alongside wood for easy testing and study. Materials properties, ease of it being worked on and its value are among the few properties which are compared against those of wood and other materials. The utilization of technology gives wood an upper hand in most of this comparison. The wide range of products where wood can be used is just one of the many advantages that give wood an upper hand over other products. It is also based on renewable resources. All the parts of wood can be put into use, and this makes it a better fit than other materials which most of their byproducts are a waste.
Protection of wooden structure and products is a must if you want to keep the good looks in place. Wooden structures have to be kept away from water and pests that eat through the wood. The rotting and decay of the timber products are caused by the moisture and the insects. Alkaline copper Quaternary or the ACQ has turned out to be a very effective way wood preservation. As the name implies the preservative is made of copper products. Although being a good method to use for wood protection it has presents some few challenges. It has been seen corroding most metals for example aluminum in less than six months of its application. The species of the wood and the application of the wood will determine how many chemicals will be used on the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.
Another wood treating method that is fast being accepted is the use of copper metal. This method is being accepted fast because is friendly to wooden fasteners. This process is what in other words called the micronized copper wood preservative. A high-pressure liquid that has the copper metal mixed in it is driven into the wood. The difference between this method and the other copper-based methods is that the copper is used as a metal rather than a dissolved material. The characteristics of the wood are highly improved and the when this process is used to treat wood. The timber treated in this way is used in both outdoor and indoor frames that last very long.
Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. It has also shown to be an improvement in corrosion resistant properties to metal fasteners. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has proven the effectiveness of this science as one of the best wood preservation methods.
